Alternate ending.

"Bruno, time to go back to Berlin". Said his mother. Bruno objected and replied "No, I just want to play on the swing". Elsa accepted this and let him play ONLY on the swing and was very stern about it. But Bruno was outside for a purpose. He mad a promise to Shmuel that he was going to get Bruno out of the camp so Shmuel could come home with him, so that is exactly what he did. As soon as mother exited the facade of OutWith, Bruno briskly jumped of the swing and bolted as fast as he could to the camp in which Shmuel was. With the sandwich tucked away and hidden from view in his back pocket, he ran and ran and ran and never stopped until he could physically see Bruno. He saw him and his eyes just shone and he was so happy, it was so electrifying and majestic. Despite all the excitement and magic, Bruno and Shmuel knew that they had to move quicker than a bullet and be as secretive as possible.

Both juveniles were aware of the risk and danger involved. They knew that if someone found them running from the camp, the punishments would be so severe. Punishments would include not being able to escape there ever again, being gassed or even spending life in hard labor. So it was not going to be good if they didn't make it out. Bruno happily reached into his back pocket and handed Shmuel the sandwich. He scoffed it down as fast as he could. Bruno could see that his best friend hadn't eaten for weeks. As soon as he finished scoffing down the food, they both realised that none of them had any spades or other helpful utensils to get out of the camp.
As soon as they started to freak out, they see Pavel, Bruno's servant returning to the camp after finishing some gardening at his house. So unbelievably, he had a spade. Bruno screamed out "Pavel" and sprinted over to him.

Pavel got the message and started jogging up to Bruno, because of his sore leg. Once Bruno retrieved the spade, he went straight off to work to dig. He dug and he dug and he dug like a dog. Since there was a lot of roots in the ground, he struggled to dig a hole under the fence. However, after seven minutes of sheer digging, Bruno somehow managed to dig a 50 cm hole in the ground so he could crawl under. He eventually made it under and from this point, he was in the Jew extermination camp. You could see the shock on his face as he came to the sudden realisation that he quite possibly could spend his whole life there and never see his family again.

Despite him being as nervous as hell, he soldiered on and put on the clothes that someone had most likely died in. Shmuel then made a clear description of who to look out for. "It is the guards in dark green uniform with guns and whips that you have to look out for". As soon as Shmuel said that, a massive cohort of them lead by the leader with a fancy sailing type of hat started charging at them! Immediately, Bruno assisted Shmuel under the fence. They were both almost to the other side; Shmuel behind Bruno when suddenly, Shmuel exclaimed " my shoe, my shoe, I need my shoe. My great grandad gave it to me when I was just two years old.

You have to go and collect it. Please Bruno, I am begging"! He pleaded. It had been left on the other side as Bruno was tugging Shmuel under the fence to get free of the army guards. Bruno then made a heroic sacrifice putting his life on the line, to retrieve Shmuel's shoe. The attempt was successful. He snuck under the fence for the third time and the two of them were so happy and they smiled at each other. They were both gleaming with happiness but at the same time, glooming with fear. Since the guards were so large in stature, all were unable to crawl through the diminutive hole under the fence. They were safe from the army...for now. Now that they were safe, little did they know that several convoys of army were looking for them to send them back to the extermination camp to kill them. As Bruno sprinted off, Shmuel was panting and struggling to keep up.

He began screaming in unbearable pain. "Bruno asked him "what's wrong Shmuel"? And he hesitantly said "well when I arrived at the camp, the guards were so brutal to me that they broke my leg, and they never fixed me up". So Bruno was left with the challenge of figuring out a solution to this almost impossible puzzle. Both lives were on the line so Bruno had to make a critical decision. Stick together and have Bruno dragging the chain or separate, leave Shmuel temporarily so Bruno could find a bicycle and the both of them ride out of the mess. He goes with his gut instinct. Since they have a bond that is impossible to break, they are best of friends and knowing that there will be two kids fighting against one hundred army officers instead of just one kid, he comes up with the hypothesis that they have to stick together because after all, two heads are better than one.

So they start, but what they don't know is they are walking straight down the path of danger. Oblivious to this, they progressed down the path when all of a sudden, the commodious convoy of army appeared phantasmagorically. Even though they made a dream-like appearance, they were not happy. They were aiming for total obliteration of both of them. Bruno ran for his life but Shmuel still had a broken leg. As soon as Bruno noticed that Shmuel was unable to get away from their captors, he did something incredible. He confidently stood up against the soldiers and walked up to Shmuel to pick him up. No matter what happened, Bruno just was not going to leave Shmuel behind.

Bruno walked up to the soldiers and said "you might as well just kill two whole families because if you kill me and my friend, it is not only us that will die, our families will die emotionally. The soldiers perceived how much leadership Bruno had so they confabulated with each other and they just walked on by and nothing happened. By this time, it was already crepuscular which meant they had to hurry up and get back to OutWith. By the time they got back, it was eleven pm due to the fact that Shmuel had a broken leg. When they arrived, there was police everywhere. Bruno knew that he had made a mistake. He had go so caught up with the day that he totally forgot about his family. They had called the police an hour after mother left because when she came back and she couldn't find Bruno, they got worried. Bruno now had a lot of explaining to do. As soon as Bruno saw his family, all four of them, plus Maria hugged each other extremely propitiatingly.

Then Bruno revealed Shmuel. As soon as he saw the striped pyjamas, father had a substantial amount of vehemencies. However, the rest of the family were very apathetic towards the nine year old Jew. All of them were compassionate but one person in particular; mum. After they all met the new alien, Bruno went on to tell his family the story of meeting Shmuel and them coming back here. And then Shmuel told his story to his family and after Shmuel was finished sharing, they were all in tears. Even father! Then, both of them said in unison "I'm sorry". From that point on, there was a lot of correspondences throughout the whole family.

Then, Bruno asked the richest question of all. He asked "can he be part of our family"? It was unbearably tense for what felt like a lifetime. While mother was umming and aring, about everything, Bruno interrupted her. "Well, mum, you have to, otherwise he will just go back in the extermination camp and spend the rest of his life suffering. You don't want that do you? You will regret it for the rest of your life". And surprisingly, she said okay, only if your friend is happy with it, so am I. Shmuel willingly answered "YES, I haven't had relatives for eight and half years". Shmuel went up and introduced himself to the rest of the family, of course with utmost respect and they all seemed to be pleased to meet him. For the rest of that night, the whole family was filled with harmoniousness.

A mere one month later, Bruno and his family sold OutWith and had enough money to move back and start building their dream house in Berlin. Despite the fact that Shmuel did not have a birth certificate or any relatives, mother and father eventually completed the paperwork and legal documents to officially adopt him. Once Bruno was officially part of the family, they celebrated with a big party with all of their friends and family and Bruno was reunited with all of his old friends, and he could now say that he has a brother. A year after they moved back to Berlin, their dream house was stunning and the family could not be more pleased. Maria continued to be Bruno's maid and was now a maid to Shmuel. Finally, Bruno got out of his dirty clothes and went shopping to buy some new ones so he could fit in with the rest of the Berlin people.

Finally, Shmuel celebrated his 10th birthday and got a lot of presents. He was so excited he didn't know what to do with them all. But most importantly, he has a family that knows, love, cares, cooks and cleans for him. Ten years after living with Bruno and his family, Shmuel went on to graduate at university to study human rights. Shmuel still lives with his family and certainly will for the rest of his life.

Three themes and issues of the book.

After reading, I have discovered three key themes and issues of the book. The beginning, the middle and the end. When Bruno moves house, when he meets Shmuel and the aftermath of both of them been gassed to death.

The beginning; Bruno and his family move house. This is a significant theme because it not only shows how it means a start of a new life, it also shows how benevolent the parents are at listening to there children's opinions. Not very benevolent at all. Examples to back this up is that if Bruno's father had of shown benevolence, he would have been given the option or at least given him some forewarning. Another reason why moving house was so significant for the whole family, particularly the kids is because they will not be able to contact any of their friends or family so that would make them sad which will significantly decrease their self esteem. In conclusion, I believe moving house was a key theme of the book.

The middle; Bruno meets Shmuel. This is a significant event because it is the start of a lifetime friendship and it also starts to change Bruno. It starts a lifetime friendship because for a start, they are the same age, and they are both lonely people so they keep each other company. Also, they can sort of relate to each other. An example of this is how they both don't have a strong relationship with their parents. It changes Bruno because he is more happy that he has finally met a friend the same age as him to play with. Especially after moving house, Bruno was very sad, fearing that he would not find friends ever again. Also, his morals start to change because at the start, he was very needy, but after meeting Shmuel, Bruno is helping him all the time.

The end; Bruno and Shmuel get gassed to death. This is a significant time of the novel because it is not just the event itself that was shocking, it was also the aftermath that was shocking. The actual event is significant because Bruno and Shmuel spend their last moments together holding hands and they end their lives stocking with each other no matter what. The aftermath is significant because instead of the father feeling grief that his son has just been gassed to death in a Jew camp, the father showed no emotional attachment with the situation. This just goes to show how snide Bruno's father is.

A diary in my perspective as to what Bruno might have been thinking.
Dear diary,

Yesterday morning was just a normal average day in Berlin. The sun was shining and I was playing with my friends in the streets. But today, my dad said "Bruno, this week, we will be packing up and moving house"! I was devastated. Now, I will not be able to contact or play with my friends. Even though my older sister Gretel (who is twelve) is in the same situation as me, she keeps telling me "Bruno, it's okay, it's okay". She keeps reassuring me. That's all she has been saying to me for the last few days, along with "I love my dolls so much, they are my family". Even though Gretel hates me, I think she is amazing. Being so reassuring to me, keeping me calm and displaying so much responsibility. I love my sister. We are about to board the train towards my new 'really happy' life. What what can I do. I'm very sad however it's not the end of the world . Besides, everyone else in my immediate family is going through the exact same thing as me so why should I be complaining? I shouldn't.

Dear diary,

We have just moved in to the house. It's certainly big. I feel like I am an extremely rich person. There are army officers and security guards everywhere. You may think I enjoy all of this ; big house, lots of security but NO. I HATE IT. I don't care how big or secure our house is, I just want to be with my friends. I feel like I'm am isolated in America's toughest prison. The family maid Maria is helping me unpack my clothes and personalising my room by putting things I like on the walls to make me feel at home, however, it is not helping me at all. Again, I feel like I am in a prison. I ask myself why, why, why me; and I am getting no clues towards finding an answer.
Shmuel and I playing chess
Dear diary,

Today is another day, I am going to try to forget everything that happened yesterday and move on. But today, looking out my window, I see a farm. But the animals are wearing light blue and white striped pyjamas. I call Gretel to come and clarify for me but she does not come. I wait a few minutes and I eventually find a very grumpy sister asking me "what's wrong now" you whimp?  And I said "look at the farm over there with the animals wearing light blue an white striped pyjamas. She thought that it was a farm as well. We went downstairs and asked mother what it was. She cautiously said"yes Bruno, you're right, it is a 'farm' and the animals are 'special'. I believed her. Both Gretel and I were oblivious of anything suspicious.

Dear diary,

Yesterday, the weirdest thing happened. I was swinging on the swing outside yesterday just having a good time and I started to see smoke coming out of the chimney, but it was different smoke. Not smokey smoke, smelly smoke. It almost smelt like people. But I didn't think anything of it. So I continued to swing and I realised that the smell out of the chimney was coming from the farm with the special animals. Again, I didn't think anything of it. I got so distracted by everything that I was not concentrating on the way I was swinging. Then all of a sudden, BANG. I fell off the swing and plummeted my face in to the dirt on the grounds of OutWith. But that was just the start of the weirdness that occurred. Mother was out, so as soon as I screamed, a man in the light blue and white striped pyjamas rushed to my aid. He was like an angel. He just helped me up and bandaged me without a word. Which I found very surprising. He looked very sad and I did not know why so I just sat on the table and he just sat on a plastic chair waiting for my mum to pick me up and take care of the situation. He told me his name was Pavel and he was once a doctor but at the time he was peeling potatoes for dinner, so I just laughed. The man in the striped pyjamas was basically a slave. He never talked or interacted with anyone. He just worked. Mother took care of the situation and then the man just went back to work peeling potatoes.

Dear diary,

This morning, I made up an alibi that I was going out reading on the swing, but in actual fact, I was going to go exploring out the back of the house. I waited until my parents were not looking,
I took my chance and bolted for it. Then for the next few kilometres, all I saw was bush, bush and more bush. I thought I had got lost, and then I saw a huge, electrified fence near where the funny smoke was coming from. I walked closer and closer and then I started to see a little boy that looked my age with his head shaved, on the other side of the fence wearing the same light blue and white striped pyjamas as Pavel our servant. The little boy was just sitting down on the grass almost like he was meditating. I went as close as I could to the iron prison and said "Hi I'm Bruno. What's your name"? He looked up in shock and replied "Shmuel". Again, I laughed; but I really shouldn't have. Because I later found out through chatting with him that he was nine and he doesn't have a mother or father. I also asked him about the number on his pyjamas because I had noticed that our servant was wearing the number 1324 on the left corner of his pyjamas and Shmuel was wearing the number 937 on his pyjamas. It turns out that it's not a numbers game, but more their outfit that they wear everywhere they go in the iron prison. It was an amazing chat and I think I stayed there for about one and a half hours.

Dear diary,

I saw Bruno a few times after that, and our chats were everything from asking each other how we were feeling to even discovering why Shmuel was in the camp. Since Shmuel was stuck in behind an electrical fence all his life, he didn't know much about important issues like government and he had never been to a big city like Berlin before. So I went home and asked father (who is an army officer) and he told me that the 'farm' was not actually a farm, rather a camp for Jews or Jewish people. I also got told that Jews were bad people. Very bad people. They are not nice and that I should never be friends with them. My sister agreed with father. They said, that it was a good thing that all the Jews were locked behind an electrified fence all their lives because they were not actual people.I was left very, very confused.

Dear diary,

After staying up all of last night thinking about what father and my sister were saying, I continued to feel very, very confused. I raced back to see Shmuel. I asked him if he knew why he was behind the electric fence and then he went silent. He then revealed something that I didn't see coming. He said to me "I'm a Jew". I then told him what my family said. He took the info and moved on. He started talking about his lifestyle and I started talking about mine. We just talked and talked and talked. We said goodbye to each other and I reached my hand through the gaps of the fence and he did the same. Now we had a bond as strong as ever. That night, I went back home and had nothing much for dinner. Just seven peas and one single bite of meat and then went to bed. Around about half past nine, I still couldn't get to sleep so I snuck into my sisters room in tears. Se accepted me, let me in and tucked me under the covers. She could see I was clearly distressed about something so she asked me "what's wrong Bruno"? I wasn't going to lie. But I didn't completely tell her the truth. Asked her if there is such thing as a nice Jew and she replied NO.
I tried to convince her that not all Jews are bad but then she asked me why I thought that. I tried to spit everything out but I just couldn't come to terms with it. I simply said "I don't know".

Dear diary,

Yesterday, I was just in OutWith and then guess who I saw cleaning the dishes and setting up for dinner? BRUNO! I was shocked (in a good way though). I immediately went and got him some food. I got him a bread roll. He started eating it like he hadn't eaten for weeks. And it turns out that he actually had nothing to eat for weeks. He continued to set up and clean and then all of a sudden, lieutenant Kolter, a guard from the army asked Shmuel how he received the bread roll. The lieutenant screamed at him asking I'm how he got it demanding an answer. When he didn't get an answer, he asked me how he got the bread roll. I freaked and I just without thinking, instantly said that "I don't know this boy, I just saw him and he stole the bread roll". Straight after, I felt like such an idiot because I could be ending my best friends life. Shmuel exited the facade of OutWith and I haven't seen him since. That night I felt terrible and once again, unsurprisingly, couldn't sleep. Just then, I went to the site to visit Bruno and he wasn't there. I started to get worried.

Dear diary,

The past few days have been extremely stressful because I keep visiting the site of my best friend and every time I go, he is not there. I am currently extremely fearful that I may have ended his life. I have not been sleeping at all. The tension is SO high, however, I cannot show it because If I do, my parents, especially father will begin to question me and then all the information, that I have being meeting up with a Jew on a daily basis and being nice to him, will gradually start to leak out and if father finds out, I tell you, he will certainly not be happy. Also, I am currently BEGGING that lieutenant Kolter will tell father what happened. And again, if father finds out anything to do with Jews or running out to the back where it is out of bounds, he would give me unimaginable punishments such as not eating for weeks or getting smacked and whipped. That is if I am lucky. I am really, really scared now.

Dear diary,

Today was a new day and I tried not to stress too much about not seeing Shmuel but it is very hard not to stress when you think that before I lied to the lieutenant, Shmuel and I were meeting up with each other everyday and also, I could not imagine the shame and guilt I would feel if I ended a nine year olds life. Although, if he is dead, I have got no one to blame but myself. Thankfully though, I try
one last time to search for Bruno and it was successful. He came back to his usual spot sitting down on the grass in the same meditating position. I greeted him the same way I met him; by saying "hi". He looked up at me and as soon as I saw his face, I knew I had made as huge mistake by saying what I said to the lieutenant. Even though he was not dead, he didn't come out of if un-injured. I could easily see a battered eye with a few significant lacerations here and there. I felt terrible, but at least he was alive. I quickly apologised and he took his time but he eventually accepted my apology and said "it's alright". I still felt terrible but I felt more relieved than I did before. We started playing chess and we had fun. Shmuel was beginning to get happier but I could just tell that something else was wrong. I asked him "Shmuel, what's wrong"? And he said "I can't find my dad".
We just looked at each other and you could feel the sadness and fear in both his eyes and mine. I made him a promise to make up for injuring him. I said "I will help you find your dad no matter what it takes". I made the promise and now I have to keep it. I did something bad to Shmuel and now I have to redeem myself.

Dear diary,

Earlier today, I met up with Shmuel and we discussed ways for me to find his father. We kept thinking and thinking and thinking and kept trashing ideas and trashing ideas and it just really wasn't working. After almost two hours of ideas, I we came up with an idea that was actually physically possible. For Shmuel to get a spare set of clothes for me and for me to dig a hole under the fence so I would look like I would fit in with all the Jews. Both Shmuel and I were ecstatic and very excited about this master plan, however, I was the most nervous I have ever been in my life because, if something goes wrong, it could potentially ruin our lives forever. But I made the promise so I have to follow through with it. At the same time, I felt happy about doing this because I feel as though I am doing something for Shmuel. Otherwise If I took and never gave back, that would not be very nice and it would also make me a person with no benevolence or friendship whatsoever. And that is not who I am so that is why I am doing it.

Dear diary,

Time for my plan to take place. This morning could very well be my last because if anything goes wrong, it would put my life and Shmuel's life in jeopardy. If this goes wrong, it could be my last journal entry ever. But I am willing to take that risk. Allin the good of finding Shmuel's dad. Firstly, I will go and tell my parents that I am going onto the swing to look at the views while reading my adventure books, then I am going to sneak out at ten AM, next, I will meet Bruno at the fence, dig a hole under, change into the spare set of clothes, get Shmuel a sandwich, enter the Jew side, find Bruno's dad, get back out to the my side and finally, run home ready for lunch. If this goes terribly wrong, it IS the end of the world.
Kind Regards,
Bruno
GOODBYE.

Boy in the striped pyjamas book Week 1. Blog post 2

After reading the book, I half expected what the ending was going to be. I was not expecting at all what was going to happen with Bruno and Shmuel and how they were going to spend their last moments together and where they were going to spend their last moments together.

However, I was expecting that the relationship that Bruno and Shmuel had with each other would reach an all time high... and I was right. The reason I predicted that the relationship that Bruno had with Shmuel would reach a peak by the end of the book was because all through the book, their relationship with each other slowly but surely started to increase.

There was really no problem resolved because Bruno died, but I strongly believe that the bond between Bruno's mum and Bruno's older sister got heaps stronger by the conclusion of the book. However, the bond between the father and the rest of the family decreased substantially.

I predicted this was going to happen because, through the book, Bruno and Shmuel had a steady, stable and strong relationship with each other, all through the book, the relationship between the father and the rest of the family was very low. They were always fighting and arguing (especially the mother and father).

I feel as though both Bruno's mother and his sister were deeply saddened and in shock at the same time by the end of the book. Still, the father wasn't affected by any of this.
The reason I believe that the father was not saddened by Bruno's death was of two reasons. One, he was in the army, which meant he had a pretty thick skin, so he wouldn't have been that emotionally attached with the situation.

And two, the father only very rarely had a positive relationship with any of his family members so agin, I don't think he was too emotionally attached to the situation.
The clues in the story that show this is when after Bruno dies, the mother and daughter go back to Berlin while the dad stays in OutWith. Also, in OutWith, the father didn't feel in any way affected.

Boy in the striped pyjamas book week 1. Blog post 3
After reading this book, I strongly believe that Bruno experienced the biggest change by the end of the book. Reasons supporting my belief are that he is going through an emotional change by meeting Shmuel.

His lifestyle changes because he has moved house and is still trying to emotionally settle in. Additionally, Bruno's relationship with his family has changed because he starts lying to them. He says 'I am going out on the swing' when he is in actual fact he was going to meet Shmuel. Thankfully, he never gets caught... Until right at the end.

Also, Bruno's relationship with Shmuel changes quite a lot as well because it turns from a friendly relationship at the start of the book, and then, then develops into the two boys not being friends, and then, right at the very end, turns into the strongest relationship that could ever be.

Bruno's thinking and values change substantially throughout the course of the book. One example of this is when he moves house right at the very start of the book, he is sad, angry and annoyed and the dad continued to show no benevolence to any of them, but then, as the book goes along, Bruno thinking starts to switch from sadness, anger and annoyance to acceptance.

During the book, the dad asks him and his sister if they wanted to go back to Berlin and Bruno said 'NO'. At the start of the book, the answer would have being a definite YES. The father continued to show no benevolence. Despite this, they still stayed in OutWith.

I strongly believe that at the end of the book, the relationship that Bruno and Shmuel have with each other reached an all time high peak. The clue that suggests this the most is the fact the Bruno and Shmuel have always had a predominantly strong relationship so I believe that that had hit an all time high at the end of the novel.

Boy in the striped pyjamas book week 1

Boy in the striped pyjamas week 1.

The boy in the striped pyjamas book is set in the country of Berlin in World War II during the war between the Nazi's (Germany) and the Jews. I believe that the conflict of Boy in the striped pyjamas is the conflict between Bruno and his family. The reason I say this is because from reading the book, I have discovered that Bruno and his sister hate eachother and later on in the book, there is one scene where the mother has a conflict with her husband. I think that the reason why there is so much conflict between the family in the book is because firstly, the dad is extremely passionate about what he does, so that can come out in his persona in a bad way, Bruno feels 'confined' because the backyard which abuts the forest is "Out of Bounds At All Times And No Exceptions", and in is other house, he was free to play anywhere he wanted and with his friends, so Bruno feels isolated from his friends, and Bruno's mother is horrified to find out what is happening next door in the "farm". Additionally, everybody misses the old house and does not like the new house, except for the dad. However, they The People involved in this central conflict are the predominantly mum, dad and Bruno. At the end of the book, the conflict ends. After Bruno gets gassed with Shmuel, the family eventually go back to Berlin (except for the father). He stayed in OutWith (the main house of the story) for just over one year and he became very disliked by fellow soldiers. One day, he re-enacted the last moments of his sons life, going to the fence and just imagining what Bruno was going through at the time.
